Polished diamonds are under your feet

Right now, the rest of my rowing crew are on a training camp in Portugal.

I have to admit, while I was helping load the boats up on Thursday night, I was kind of down in the dumps about staying here while they all disappeared off to warmer climates.

But it didn’t turn out like that.

First, the weather turned bad in Portugal, and the beautiful flat water you go looking for on training camps didn’t appear.

Then a power cut hit across the whole of Spain and Portugal.

Back home, I went out on my own this morning.

Sunshine and perfect water (partly because everyone else is away), and the coffee machine was working afterwards.

It was a reminder that you don’t have to look far to get what you want. Sometimes what you want is right where you are.

It was a sports version of the Acres of Diamonds story that Earl Nightingale told years ago.

Right now, everyone is losing their shit about AI, I’m wondering what’s going to happen to their business.

For sure, it’s going to be a time of massive change, but you have skills that are valuable already.

Before you start chasing something new, look at what you already have and see if you can make that 10 times better, instead of the uphill slog of trying to get good in a new market.

Right now I’m doubling down on something I started to learn 30 years ago.

Building email lists.

The crowd who arrived in a bubble, hoping to make a fast buck, has left again. But email has got into the heads of marketers once more.

Social media is turning to shit, and marketers understand the value of an audience.

If you know how to build an email list, you’re standing on a diamond mine right now.

I build email lists, that grow into businesses.
